Car Insurance Coverage Types in Germany
Every car in Germany needs insurance. But how much coverage you get is up to you. Here is what each level actually means.
Haftpflicht (Liability)
The legal minimum. Covers damage you cause to other people, their cars, and their property. Does not cover your own car at all.
Best for: older cars, budget-conscious drivers
Teilkasko (Partial)
Everything in Haftpflicht plus theft, fire, storm, hail, glass breakage, and wildlife collisions. Does not cover accidents that are your fault.
Best for: mid-value cars, 3-10 years old
Vollkasko (Full)
Everything. Covers damage to your own car even when it is your fault, plus vandalism. All Teilkasko coverage is included.
Best for: new cars, leased or financed vehicles
What Affects Your Car Insurance Price in Germany
Your premium is not random. These are the biggest factors, and understanding them helps you find cheaper car insurance.
No-Claims Class (Schadenfreiheitsklasse)
This is the single biggest factor. Every year you drive without a claim, you move up a class and pay less. New drivers start at SF 0 (most expensive). After 10+ claim-free years, you can pay a fraction of the starting price. If you moved to Germany from abroad, some insurers will recognize your foreign driving history.
Car Type Class (Typklasse)
Every car model has a risk rating based on accident and theft statistics. The GDV updates these annually. For 2026, about 5.9 million drivers got a higher classification (more expensive) and 4.5 million got a lower one. About 75% stayed the same.
Regional Class (Regionalklasse)
Where you register your car matters. Germany has 413 registration districts, each with its own risk rating based on local accident data. Rural areas like Brandenburg tend to be cheaper. Big cities cost more. The ADAC has the latest regional data.
Other Factors
Your age (under 25 costs more), annual mileage (less driving = cheaper), parking situation (garage vs street), and whether you are the only driver. All of these feed into the premium calculation.
How to Get Cheaper Car Insurance in Germany
These are not tricks. They are real ways to lower your premium, backed by data from Finanztip.
Compare Every Year
Prices change annually. Finanztip found that comparing just two portals side by side gets you within a few percent of the absolute best price.
Accept Workshop Binding
Let your insurer pick the repair shop (Werkstattbindung). Average discount: 11% on your total premium. Not great for leased or brand-new cars though.
Pick a Higher Deductible
A 300 EUR deductible (Selbstbeteiligung) saves you about 25% on average compared to no deductible. 150 EUR saves about 18%.
Pay Annually
Paying your premium once a year instead of monthly saves about 8%. That is essentially free money for a one-time payment.
Report Actual Mileage
If you drive less than the average, say so. Lower annual mileage means a lower premium. Be honest though, because false info can void your coverage.
Switch Before November 30
Most contracts end December 31st. Cancel by November 30th to switch to a cheaper insurer for the new year. Miss that date and you are locked in for another 12 months.

Cheap Car Insurance for Expats in Germany
If you just moved to Germany and are searching for affordable car insurance, prices might feel higher than back home. Here is why, and what you can do about it.
The No-Claims Problem
Without German driving history, you start at SF 0, which is the most expensive class. Some insurers will accept a letter from your previous insurer abroad confirming your claim-free years. This can make a massive difference in your premium.
Ask the insurer upfront if they accept foreign no-claims bonuses. Not all do, but enough of them that it is worth checking. CosmosDirekt, Allianz, and some others are known to be open to it.
Tip: You cannot register a car in Germany without an EVB number (elektronische Versicherungsbestaetigung), a 7-character code from your insurer. Get your insurance sorted first, then go to the Zulassungsstelle. Our instant car insurance guide walks you through the whole process.
