Why Car Rentals Require Credit Cards
Car rental companies need to secure a deposit - typically €500-2000 depending on the vehicle. This protects them against damages, traffic fines, or fuel charges. Only real credit cards can pre-authorize (block) this amount without actually charging it.
Typical deposit amounts:
- Economy car (VW Polo, Opel Corsa): €500-800
- Standard car (VW Golf, Ford Focus): €800-1200
- Premium/SUV (BMW 3, Audi Q5): €1500-2500
- Luxury (Mercedes E, BMW 5): €2500-5000+
Debit cards will NOT work!
Even if your debit card has a Visa or Mastercard logo, it will be rejected for deposits by most rental companies (Sixt, Europcar, Hertz, Avis). You need a real credit card with a credit line. Prepaid cards also don't work.
