Installment Loan Rates by Credit Score

Your SCHUFA score is probably the single biggest factor in what rate you will get. Here is a rough breakdown of what to expect in Germany right now.

Understanding Installment Loan Rates in Germany

This trips up a lot of people, so let me break it down simply.

Nominal Rate (Sollzins)

Just the raw interest rate. Does not include processing fees or other costs. Not great for comparing installment loans because it hides the real price.

Effective APR (Effektivzins)

This is the one that matters. It bundles everything together: interest, fees, the lot. German law requires banks to show this number. Always compare using the Effektivzins.

About advertised minimum rates: The very low rates you see in ads (under 1%) are typically available only to people with excellent credit, often for specific loan purposes and amounts. In Germany, lenders are required to show the rate that at least two-thirds of approved applicants actually receive (Zweidrittelzins). That number gives you a much more realistic picture of what you will likely pay. As of early 2026, the median Zweidrittelzins sits around 6.19%.

6 Ways to Get a Better Installment Loan Rate

These are not magic tricks. They are practical steps that can genuinely bring your rate down.

1

Check Your SCHUFA First

Errors happen more often than you think. Fix them before applying and your score could jump.

2

State Your Loan Purpose

Car loans and renovation loans get better rates because the bank has collateral. Do not leave it as "other" if you can help it.

3

Pick a Shorter Term

A 24-month loan usually comes with a lower rate than a 60-month one. Just make sure the monthly payment works for you.

4

Add a Co-Borrower

A partner or spouse with good credit can improve the terms significantly. Two incomes, less risk for the bank.

5

Actually Compare

Rates between banks can differ by several percentage points for the exact same installment loan. Use our credit comparison tool to see real offers side by side.

6

Try Online Banks

Direct banks without branch networks often pass on their lower overhead as better rates. Worth checking alongside traditional banks.

Which Installment Loan Type Fits You?

Not all installment loans are the same. The type you pick can affect your rate. Here is the quick version.

Personal Loan (Ratenkredit)

The most common type. Use it for anything: furniture, a trip, consolidating bills. Fixed monthly payments over 12 to 84 months. Rates tend to be moderate since there is no collateral.

Car Loan (Autokredit)

Specifically for buying a vehicle. Because the car serves as collateral, rates are usually lower than a general personal loan. Worth it if you are buying a car.

Refinancing (Umschuldung)

Already have a loan with a high rate? You can take a new loan at a lower rate to pay off the old one. Makes sense when rates have dropped since you originally borrowed.

Small Loan (Kleinkredit)

For amounts under 5,000 EUR. Quick approval, short terms. Handy for unexpected expenses. Rates can be a bit higher for very small amounts though.

Your Rights as an Installment Loan Borrower in Germany

German consumer protection is strong when it comes to loans. A few things worth knowing:

14-Day Withdrawal Right

After signing a loan contract, you have 14 days to cancel without giving a reason (Widerrufsrecht). This is required by law.

Early Repayment

You can pay off your installment loan early at any time. The prepayment penalty (Vorfaelligkeitsentschaedigung) is capped at 1% of the remaining amount, or 0.5% if less than a year is left (per section 502 BGB).

Transparent Pricing

Banks must show the effective APR (Effektivzins) in all advertising and contracts. They also have to show the representative rate most customers actually get (Zweidrittelzins).

Data Protection (DSGVO)

Your financial data is protected under German and EU privacy law. Banks cannot share your information without your explicit consent.
