Why personal liability insurance matters in Germany
German civil law holds you personally liable for damage you cause to others. Section 823 of the BGB (the German civil code) spells this out: if you cause damage through your own fault, you owe compensation. No cap, no limit.
If you're cycling to work and accidentally cause a collision that leaves someone with a permanent injury, you could be looking at six-figure compensation payments stretching over years. That scenario makes liability insurance worth every cent of its €3-5 monthly cost.
Already have car insurance? Good. But that only covers damage while driving. Personal liability covers everything else in daily life.

Frequently asked questions
Personal liability insurance in Germany: what you need to know
If you're living in Germany, whether as an expat, student, or long-term resident, personal liability insurance (Privathaftpflichtversicherung) is something you'll hear about pretty quickly. And for good reason. With coverage starting from about €3 per month, it's one of the most affordable ways to protect yourself from potentially life-changing financial consequences.
What a good policy should include
A solid Haftpflichtversicherung covers accidental damage you cause to third parties:
- Personal injury: Medical bills, rehabilitation, lost wages, pain and suffering. This is the big one, and why experts recommend at least €10 million in coverage.
- Property damage: Broken laptops, spilled wine on someone's couch, a football through a neighbor's window.
- Rental apartment damage (Mietsachschäden): If you accidentally damage your rental, floors, walls, doors, plumbing, a good policy covers it.
- Borrowed items: Damage to things friends or family lent you.
- Key loss (Schlüsselverlust): Losing your building key can get expensive fast. Often an add-on, not standard.
How much coverage do you actually need?
For personal injury, the recommendation is clear: at least €10 million. Severe injury cases in Germany can result in lifelong compensation payments that add up quickly. For property and financial damage, €3-5 million is usually enough.
The price gap between €10M and €50M in coverage? Typically just €1-2 per month. So there's really no reason to go with the lower amount.
Single or family coverage?
If you live alone, a single policy (Singletarif) is straightforward. If you have a partner, spouse, or kids, a family policy (Familientarif) covers everyone in your household for just €2-4 more per month.
Kids stay covered under family policies until they finish their first education or training, typically until age 25-27. They don't need a separate policy while covered under yours.
Extras worth considering
- Schlüsselverlust (key loss): If you rent, this is practically a must. Lock replacements for apartment buildings are not cheap.
- Mietsachschäden (rental damage): Should be included or added. Most renters will need this at some point.
- Forderungsausfalldeckung: Covers you if someone damages your property but doesn't have their own insurance.
- Worldwide coverage: If you travel frequently, make sure your policy covers incidents outside Germany.
A note on taxes
Personal liability insurance premiums can be listed in your German tax return as Vorsorgeaufwendungen (preventive expenses). The amounts are small, but every bit counts when filing your Steuererklärung. This isn't tax advice, just something worth knowing. Need help managing your finances in Germany?
