What Is an EVB Number?
The EVB number (elektronische Versicherungsbestaetigung) is a 7-character alphanumeric code that proves you have valid car insurance (Kfz-Versicherung) in Germany. Without it, the Zulassungsstelle will not register your vehicle. No EVB, no license plates, no driving.
It replaced the old paper insurance cards (Doppelkarte) back in 2008. Now everything is digital. Your insurer generates the code and the Zulassungsstelle verifies it electronically. The whole system runs through the GDV (German Insurance Association). In German, you will often see it called "EVB Nummer."
Format
- 7 characters: letters and numbers
- First 2 characters identify your insurer
- Letters I and O are excluded (avoid confusion with 1 and 0)
- Example format: GS12A4B
When You Need It
- Registering a new car (Neuzulassung)
- Re-registering after buying a used car (Ummeldung)
- Getting temporary plates (Kurzzeitkennzeichen)
- Switching your insurer (you get a new EVB)
Important: The EVB only proves you have liability insurance (Haftpflicht), which is the legal minimum for all motor vehicles in Germany. If you also want Teilkasko or Vollkasko, compare the full car insurance options in Germany before signing up.

Your nationality does not matter. If you can get car insurance in Germany, you can get an EVB number. The process is exactly the same for everyone.
The only thing that might slow you down is your driving license situation. EU licenses are valid indefinitely in Germany. Non-EU licenses are valid for 6 months after your Anmeldung (official registration of residence). After that, you need a German license or an official conversion.
How to Get an EVB Number as a Foreigner
- Valid ID or passport
- German bank account (IBAN) for premium payments
- Driving license (EU: valid indefinitely; non-EU: valid 6 months after Anmeldung)
- Vehicle details (make, model, HSN/TSN numbers from registration document)
If you have a claims-free driving history from your home country, bring proof from your old insurer. Some German insurers will give you a better SF class (no-claims bonus), which means lower premiums. Read more in our full car insurance guide for Germany. New to Germany with no credit history?
