Driving in Germany without insurance is illegal. Every car and motorcycle needs at least liability coverage (German: Haftpflichtversicherung) before you can register it. The good news: you can compare providers right here, in English, and find a rate that fits your situation.

How Car Insurance Works in Germany

Germany has three levels of car insurance. Everyone needs the first one. The other two are your choice.

Liability (Haftpflicht) — required by law

Covers damage you cause to other people, their cars, or their property. According to BaFin, the legal minimum is €7.5 million for personal injury and €1.22 million for property damage. Most insurers offer higher limits at no extra cost.

Partial Coverage (Teilkasko) — optional

Protects your own car against theft, fire, hail, storm, flood, glass breakage, and wildlife collisions. Does not cover accidents you cause yourself. A reasonable middle ground if your car has some value left.

Comprehensive (Vollkasko) — optional

Everything Teilkasko covers, plus damage from accidents you cause yourself, vandalism, and hit-and-run incidents. Makes sense for newer or financed vehicles. Banks often require it if you take out a car loan.

What Affects Your Insurance Price?

Two people with the same car can pay very different premiums. Here is what moves the needle:

Typklasse (vehicle class)

The GDV rates every car model by accident frequency and repair cost. Lower class means cheaper insurance. Check your car at our car insurance comparison.

SF-Klasse (no-claims class)

Every year without a claim earns you a better class and lower premium. Some insurers accept driving history from abroad. Ask when you compare.

Regionalklasse (where you live)

Cities with more accidents cost more. Rural areas are cheaper. Moving can change your premium. See our comparison tool for your area.

Your age and driving experience

Younger drivers and those with less experience pay more. Telematics tariffs that track driving behavior can help offset this.

Need an eVB Number?

The eVB number (elektronische Versicherungsbestätigung) is a 7-digit code your insurer sends you after you sign up. You need it at the Zulassungsstelle to register your car. Without it, no registration.

You can get one through our car insurance comparison. Most providers deliver it by email within a few minutes. Need a quick overview? See our eVB number guide.

Insurance Tips for Expats in Germany

If you just moved to Germany, here are the things most people wish they had known earlier:

Bring your driving history

Some insurers accept proof of no-claims years from your home country. Get a letter from your previous insurer before you cancel. It can save you hundreds per year.

Compare before you commit

Prices vary a lot between providers. Same car, same person, different insurer — the gap can be several hundred euros. Use a comparison tool.

November 30 is the deadline

Most policies renew on January 1. If you want to switch, cancel by November 30. Miss it and you are locked in for another year.

Motorcycle? Consider seasonal registration

If you only ride from spring to fall, a seasonal plate (Saisonkennzeichen) means you only pay insurance for those months. Saves roughly 30-40% compared to a full year. Check our motorcycle insurance comparison.
