Motorcycle Insurance in Germany 2026

Riding in Germany without insurance is not an option. Every motorcycle, scooter, and moped needs at least liability coverage before it can hit the road. The prices vary a lot depending on your bike, your riding history, and where you live. Comparing providers is the fastest way to find what works for your budget.

Three Levels of Motorcycle Insurance

Same structure as car insurance. One is mandatory, the other two are your call.

Liability (Haftpflicht) — mandatory

Covers damage you cause to other people and their property. Required by law. Without a valid liability policy, the Zulassungsstelle will not issue plates. You need an eVB number from your insurer to register.

Partial Coverage (Teilkasko) — optional

Protects your own bike against theft, fire, storm, hail, flood, glass damage, and wildlife collisions. Does not cover accidents you cause yourself. A good middle ground for bikes with some market value left.

Comprehensive (Vollkasko) — optional

Everything Teilkasko covers, plus self-caused crash damage and vandalism. Makes sense for new, expensive, or financed motorcycles. If you took out a loan for your bike, the bank may require it.

Seasonal Registration (Saisonkennzeichen)

Most riders in Germany do not ride year-round. If you only ride from spring to fall, a seasonal plate saves you money because you only pay insurance for those months.

How it works

  • Choose a registration period (minimum 2, maximum 11 months)
  • Most common: April through October (7 months)
  • The months are printed on your license plate
  • Outside those months, you may not ride on public roads
  • During off-season, a dormant policy covers theft and fire

What you save

  • Roughly 30 to 40 percent less than full-year insurance
  • No road tax during off-season months
  • No need to cancel and re-register every year
  • Automatic renewal each season

Watch out: During the off-season, your bike must stay parked on private property. Parking on public streets is not allowed. And no, you cannot ride it even briefly to get to the garage.

Scooters and Mopeds: Different Rules

Not every two-wheeler goes through the same registration process. It depends on the engine size and top speed.

Up to 50cc / 45 km/h

Small scooters and mopeds use a Versicherungskennzeichen (insurance plate). You buy a new plate each year from an insurer. No visit to the Zulassungsstelle needed. The plates change color annually. Costs are typically low.

Over 50cc / above 45 km/h

Larger scooters and motorcycles follow the regular registration process. You need liability insurance, an eVB number, and a trip to the Zulassungsstelle for plates. Seasonal registration is available for these vehicles.

What Affects Your Motorcycle Insurance Price?

Motorcycle insurance pricing works similarly to car insurance but with a few bike-specific twists.

Engine size and power

Bigger engines mean higher risk ratings. A 125cc commuter costs far less to insure than a 1000cc sport bike.

Your age and riding experience

Younger riders pay more. Each accident-free year improves your SF-Klasse and lowers your premium.

Typklasse (vehicle class)

The GDV classifies every motorcycle model by accident and theft statistics. Lower class, lower premium. Check yours at our comparison tool.

Where you live

Urban areas with more theft and accidents cost more than rural regions. Your Regionalklasse is based on your registered address.

5 Ways to Pay Less for Motorcycle Insurance

1. Seasonal registration. If you do not ride in winter, a Saisonkennzeichen cuts your costs by 30 to 40 percent.

2. Compare every year. Providers change their pricing annually. What was cheap last year might not be this year.

3. Higher deductible. Accepting 150 EUR Teilkasko or 300 EUR Vollkasko deductible lowers your annual premium noticeably.

4. Park securely. A locked garage reduces theft risk. Some insurers reward this with a small discount.

5. Transfer your SF-Klasse. If you have accident-free years from a car policy or from abroad, some insurers let you apply those to your motorcycle policy too.
