New SCHUFA Score 2026

Since March 17, 2026, SCHUFA calculates your credit score using 12 publicly disclosed criteria. The old percentage scale (0-100%) is gone, replaced by a point system from 100 to 999. For the first time, you can check your score digitally and understand how it was calculated. This happened because two European Court of Justice rulings (C-634/21) forced SCHUFA to become transparent.

Key facts

  • Date: March 17, 2026. The old base score and 6 industry scores are replaced by one new score.
  • New scale: 100 to 999 points (previously 0 to 100 percent). Higher is better.
  • 12 criteria: Disclosed for the first time. You now know what affects your score.
  • Transition: Companies are switching gradually, full transition by end of 2028 (source: Verbraucherzentrale NRW).

The 12 criteria explained

Previously, SCHUFA used hundreds of data points without telling anyone which ones. Now there are exactly 12, and you can read what each one means. Source: DealDoktor and Verbraucherzentrale NRW.

#CriterionWhat it means
1Payment defaultsUnpaid bills, collection notices. The single most important factor.
2Age of oldest bank contractThe longer your oldest account has existed, the better.
3Age of oldest credit cardA long credit card history signals reliability.
4Age of current addressFrequent moves count against you. Stability matters.
5Age of most recent credit lineRecently opened credit lines lower your score slightly.
6Account/card inquiries (12 months)Opening many accounts in a short time is a warning sign.
7Non-banking inquiriesInquiries from telecom, retail, insurance in the past year.
8Installment loans taken (12 months)How many new loans you took out in the last year.
9Longest remaining loan durationLong remaining terms mean long-term obligations.
10Loan statusAre current installment loans being repaid on schedule?
11Real estate financingWhether a mortgage exists (can be a positive signal).
12Identity verificationWhether identity has been verified with SCHUFA.

How to improve your score

  • Pay bills on time. Payment defaults are the most damaging factor. One missed payment can drag your score down for months.
  • Do not open too many accounts. Every new account opening in the last 12 months counts.
  • Stay at your address. The age of your current address is now its own criterion.
  • Keep old accounts. Your oldest bank contract and credit card improve your score.

Getting a loan with a low score

A low score does not mean automatic rejection. Every bank has its own criteria. Comparing rates uses a soft inquiry (Konditionsanfrage) that does not affect your score.

Frequently asked questions

What changed with the SCHUFA score on March 17, 2026?
SCHUFA replaced its old base score (0-100 percent) and six industry-specific scores with a single new score using 12 disclosed criteria. The new scale goes from 100 to 999 points. Consumers can now view their score digitally for the first time. Source: Verbraucherzentrale NRW, March 2026.
What are the 12 criteria of the new SCHUFA score?
1) Payment defaults, 2) Age of oldest bank contract, 3) Age of oldest credit card, 4) Age of current address, 5) Age of most recent credit line, 6) Account and card inquiries in last 12 months, 7) Non-banking sector inquiries, 8) Installment loans taken in last 12 months, 9) Longest remaining loan duration, 10) Status of active installment loans, 11) Real estate financing, 12) Identity verification completed. Source: SCHUFA via Verbraucherzentrale NRW.
Will my score change?
Possibly. The calculation method is different, so your score may come out differently. SCHUFA says most consumers can expect similar or better results. The old and new scores are not directly comparable because the scales are different (percent vs. points).
Why did SCHUFA change its scoring system?
Two rulings by the European Court of Justice (ECJ case C-634/21, December 7, 2023 and C-203/22, February 27, 2025) required SCHUFA to be more transparent about how scores are calculated. Consumers now have the right to understand the logic behind their score.
Can I see my new score for free?
Yes. Under GDPR (Article 15), you are entitled to one free data copy per year. Since March 17, 2026, you can also view your new score digitally at meineSCHUFA.de.
How can I improve my SCHUFA score?
Now that you know the criteria, you can work on them: pay bills on time (most important factor), do not open too many accounts at once, keep old bank accounts and credit cards active, and stay at the same address longer.
Does comparing loans affect my SCHUFA score?
No. Loan comparisons use a Konditionsanfrage (rate inquiry), which is invisible to other banks and does not affect your score. Only when you formally apply for a specific loan does a Kreditanfrage (credit inquiry) get recorded.
