Car Insurance Germany 2026: What Changed

Car insurance in Germany 2026: new Typklassen, rising premiums, cancellation button law, and your right to switch. What changed and how to save.

Why car insurance costs more in 2026

If your car insurance in Germany got more expensive this year, you are not alone. The GDV (German Insurance Association) reclassified about 5.9 million vehicles into higher Typklassen for liability insurance. Another 4.5 million moved down. For roughly 75 percent of cars, nothing changed.

The price increases are not only about Typklassen. Repair costs went up because spare parts and workshop labor cost more than before. Modern cars have more sensors, cameras, and electronics that are expensive to replace after even minor collisions. On top of that, weather-related claims from hail and flooding hit insurers harder in recent years.

You can check whether your car was affected on our Typklassen 2026 page.

Three new laws that affect car insurance in 2026

The cancellation button (from June 19, 2026)

Starting June 19, 2026, every online insurance contract must include a cancellation button that is as visible as the "buy" button. This comes from Section 356a of the German Civil Code (BGB), implementing an EU directive.

What this means in practice: if you signed up for your car insurance online, cancelling it will be as straightforward as signing up was. No more digging through settings to find a contact form or writing a letter. One click, done.

This applies to new contracts first. Existing contracts may be covered later depending on the insurer's implementation timeline. Until then, you can still cancel your car insurance using the traditional written process or by letting your new insurer handle it.

Product liability for software (from December 9, 2026)

From December 9, 2026, software defects are treated as product defects under German law. This matters for car insurance because modern vehicles rely heavily on software for driver assistance systems, automatic braking, and lane keeping.

If a software bug causes an accident, the manufacturer is liable, not just the driver. For insurers, this makes it easier to recover costs from manufacturers when software failures contribute to a crash. For you as a driver, it means better legal protection if your car's system malfunctions.

Next-generation eCall (2026 onwards)

New vehicles sold in Germany must have 4G or 5G-capable eCall systems. The old 2G and 3G networks are being phased out, and eCall systems that rely on them will stop working at some point.

If you are buying a used car, check which eCall system it has. A car with a 2G-based eCall will not be able to make emergency calls once the network shuts down. This does not affect your insurance directly, but it is worth knowing.

Your right to cancel when premiums go up (Sonderkuendigungsrecht)

This is the part most people miss. If your insurer raised your premium without improving your coverage, German law gives you a special cancellation right. It is called the Sonderkuendigungsrecht, and it is codified in the Insurance Contract Act (VVG).

Here is how it works:

  1. Your insurer sends you a letter with the new, higher premium
  2. From the date you receive that letter, you have one month to cancel
  3. This right applies regardless of the regular November 30 deadline
  4. You switch to a new insurer, who handles the cancellation paperwork
  5. Your car stays registered. No visit to the Zulassungsstelle needed.

Many people do not realize they have this right. If you got a premium increase letter and did nothing, it might not be too late. Check the date on the letter and count one month forward.

The full switching process is explained in our car insurance switching guide.

Key dates for car insurance in 2026

DateWhat happensWhat you should do
June 19, 2026Cancellation button requiredCheck if your insurer added it
September/OctoberInsurers send premium noticesCompare with current market
November 30Annual switching deadlineCancellation must arrive by this date
December 9, 2026New product liability lawRelevant for software-heavy vehicles
January 1, 2027New policy startsYour new coverage is active

The November 30 deadline is the one that matters most for switching. Your cancellation letter needs to arrive at your old insurer by that date. Not be sent. Arrive. Use registered mail or let the new insurer handle it.

How to check if you are overpaying

The quickest way is to run a comparison. Enter your car details and current coverage level, and you will see what other insurers charge for the same protection. The whole thing takes about five minutes.

Even if you do not switch, you will know whether your current price is reasonable. Sometimes the answer is yes, your insurer is competitive. Other times the difference is a few hundred euros per year.

What expats should know about these changes

If you moved to Germany recently, the insurance system can feel opaque. Here are the things that matter most for non-German residents:

Your SF-Klasse (no-claims bonus class) starts at zero when you first register a car in Germany. That means higher premiums in the first years. Some insurers accept driving history from your home country, so bring documentation if you have it.

Liability insurance (German: Haftpflicht) is mandatory. You cannot register or drive a car without it. If your coverage lapses, the registration office can deregister your vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Is car insurance more expensive in Germany in 2026?

For many drivers, yes. About 5.9 million vehicles were reclassified into higher Typklassen. General repair and parts costs also increased. A comparison shows whether you can find a cheaper provider.

What is the cancellation button law?

From June 19, 2026, online insurance contracts must include a visible cancellation button (Section 356a BGB). Cancelling must be as easy as signing up.

What is the Sonderkuendigungsrecht?

If your insurer raises your premium without improving coverage, you have one month from the notification date to cancel, regardless of the regular November 30 deadline. This right is based on the Insurance Contract Act (VVG).

When is the deadline to switch car insurance?

The regular deadline is November 30. Your cancellation must arrive at your old insurer by that date. For premium increases, you get an additional one-month window.

Do I need to deregister my car to switch insurance?

No. The switch happens online. Your new insurer sends the eVB number to the registration office directly. Your plates and registration stay the same.

Does the product liability law affect my insurance?

Not directly, but it changes who pays when software causes an accident. Manufacturers become liable for software defects, which can reduce your liability as a driver in certain situations.

What should I check when buying a used car in 2026?

Check the eCall system. Cars with 2G or 3G-based eCall will lose emergency call capability when those networks shut down. Also check the Typklasse of the model you are considering.

How much can I save by switching car insurance?

Savings depend on your car, driving history, and current provider. Prices for identical coverage can differ significantly between insurers. The only way to know is to compare.

What to do now

If your premium went up, check whether you still have a Sonderkuendigungsrecht. Count one month from the date on your premium increase letter.

If you have not compared rates in a while, five minutes is enough to see whether you are overpaying. Prices shift every year as Typklassen change and insurers adjust their models.
