Switch Gas in 3 Steps

1

Enter your details

Your postal code and yearly gas consumption in kWh. You'll find this number on your last bill or Nebenkostenabrechnung.

3

Your new provider does the rest

They cancel your old contract and handle the switch. Your gas keeps flowing the entire time (EnWG).

On the default tariff (Grundversorgung)? You can cancel with just 2 weeks notice (EnWG Section 36). For more on pricing, see our gas prices 2026 guide.

What Changed for Gas in 2026

Gas storage levy gone

The gas storage levy (Gasspeicherumlage), introduced during the 2022 energy crisis, was dropped at the start of 2026. One less surcharge on your bill. Details on our gas storage levy page.

CO2 price up to 55-65 EUR/ton

The CO2 price now sits in a corridor of 55 to 65 EUR per ton (BEHG). That adds about 1.40 ct/kWh to your gas bill. Auctions start July 2026 at the Leipzig energy exchange.

Grid fees up ~11%

Gas network operators raised fees by roughly 11 percent in 2026 (Bundesnetzagentur). This hits all tariffs, but competitive providers absorb part of the increase. Switching from Grundversorgung is more worthwhile than ever.

RWE and the Bundesnetzagentur both expect gas prices to stay stable or trend downward over 2026, as European storage levels remain high and LNG supply has stabilized.

Your Rights as a Gas Customer

Grundversorgung: 2 weeks notice

On the default tariff? You can leave with just 2 weeks notice, any time. No penalty, no minimum term (EnWG Section 36).

Price goes up? You can cancel

If your provider announces a price increase, you get a special cancellation right (Sonderkuendigungsrecht). Walk away without penalty and switch to someone cheaper right away.

Under the Energy Industry Act (EnWG), your gas supply is legally guaranteed during any switch. The local default supplier steps in automatically if needed.

For Expats and Foreigners

Gas is usually part of your rent

In many German apartments, the landlord picks the gas provider and passes costs through your Nebenkosten. If you have your own meter and contract, you can switch freely. Not sure? Check your rental agreement or ask your Hausverwaltung.

No SCHUFA? You still get gas

Just arrived with no credit history? The Grundversorgung doesn't require a SCHUFA check, it's your legal right to have gas. Learn more about building your SCHUFA and how SCHUFA works.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does switching gas providers in Germany take?
Typically 4 to 6 weeks. Your new provider handles the paperwork and cancels your old contract for you. Gas supply is legally guaranteed throughout the process under the Energy Industry Act (EnWG). You won't have a single day without heating.
How much can I save by switching gas providers?
If you're on the default tariff (Grundversorgung), you're likely paying 10 to 30 percent above market rates. Verivox estimates that a single-family household can save up to around 1,000 EUR per year by switching to a competitive provider (early 2026).
What is the current gas price in Germany in 2026?
The average household gas price in January 2026 is 11.10 cents per kWh for a single-family home (BDEW). Recommended tariffs with a 12-month price guarantee start around 10.47 cents per kWh (Finanztip, March 2026). The gas storage levy was abolished, but grid fees rose about 11 percent and the CO2 price increased to a 55-65 EUR corridor per ton.
Is my gas supply safe during a provider switch?
Yes. The Energy Industry Act (EnWG) guarantees your gas supply at all times. If anything goes wrong during the switch, your local default supplier (Grundversorger) steps in automatically. Nobody loses gas in Germany because of a provider switch.
Can I cancel my gas contract if prices go up?
Yes. German energy law gives you a special cancellation right (Sonderkuendigungsrecht) whenever your provider announces a price increase. You can leave without penalty and switch to a cheaper provider right away. This applies to fixed and variable tariffs alike.
Do I need to speak German to switch gas providers?
The comparison tool on this page works in English. Most gas providers operate in German, though some like Ostrom offer English-language service. The switch itself is straightforward: your new provider handles everything, so you don't need to call anyone.
