For Expats and Newcomers
Getting a SIM card
You need a valid ID or passport to register a SIM card in Germany (required by law under the Telekommunikationsgesetz). Prepaid SIMs are available at supermarkets (Aldi Talk, Lidl Connect) and electronics stores without a German bank account. EU roaming is included at no extra charge.
Prepaid or contract?
New to Germany? Start with prepaid. No credit check, no long-term commitment, and you can switch anytime. Once you have an Anmeldung and bank account, contract plans offer more data for less money. Learn more about building your SCHUFA and how SCHUFA works.
