Your Rights as a Mobile Customer

Contract length and cancellation

Maximum initial contract term is 24 months. Providers must also offer a 12-month option. After the initial term, your contract continues monthly and you can cancel with 1 month notice at any time (TKG Section 56).

Price changes and moving

If your provider raises prices or changes your contract unilaterally, you can cancel immediately without penalty (TKG Section 57). If you move and your provider cannot serve the new address, you can cancel with 1 month notice.

For Expats and Newcomers

Getting a SIM card

You need a valid ID or passport to register a SIM card in Germany (required by law under the Telekommunikationsgesetz). Prepaid SIMs are available at supermarkets (Aldi Talk, Lidl Connect) and electronics stores without a German bank account. EU roaming is included at no extra charge.

Prepaid or contract?

New to Germany? Start with prepaid. No credit check, no long-term commitment, and you can switch anytime. Once you have an Anmeldung and bank account, contract plans offer more data for less money. Learn more about building your SCHUFA and how SCHUFA works.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which mobile network has the best coverage in Germany?
Telekom (D1-Netz) consistently ranks first with 96.7% 5G coverage nationwide. Vodafone (D2-Netz) covers 75% and O2/Telefonica (E-Netz) covers 76.1%. In cities, all three networks perform well. In rural areas, Telekom has a clear advantage. Source: Bundesnetzagentur Mobilfunk-Monitoring, October 2025.
How cheap are mobile plans in Germany?
Plans with 15 GB data and an Allnet-Flat (unlimited calls and texts) start at around 4.99 EUR per month from discount providers like GMX or Media Markt Go Mobile. Premium plans on the Telekom network start at roughly 40 EUR per month. The average German spends about 10 EUR per month on mobile services.
Can I cancel my mobile contract at any time?
After your initial contract period (maximum 24 months), the contract continues on a monthly basis. You can then cancel with just 1 month notice at any time (TKG Section 56). Providers must also offer contracts with a maximum 12-month initial term. If your provider raises prices, you can cancel immediately without penalty (TKG Section 57).
Do I need ID to get a SIM card in Germany?
Yes. German law (Telekommunikationsgesetz) requires identity verification for all SIM cards. You need a valid passport or national ID. Prepaid SIMs are available at supermarkets (Aldi, Lidl) and electronics stores. You do not need a German bank account or Anmeldung for prepaid.
Is EU roaming included in German mobile plans?
Yes. Since 2017, EU regulations prohibit extra roaming charges within the EU and EEA. You can use your German plan in all EU countries at no additional cost (EU Regulation 2022/612). Some providers also include Switzerland or Turkey in select plans.
Should I get prepaid or a contract plan?
Prepaid is ideal if you are new to Germany, want no commitment, or need cost control. Contract plans offer more data at lower per-GB prices but typically lock you in for 12 or 24 months. After the initial term, you can cancel monthly. Start with prepaid if you are unsure about your needs.
